How to configure Cisco Wireless router

Configuring Cisco wireless router includes installing a password, hostname, IP address and subnet mask that gives an idea about behavior and nature of router device. If you are not able to configure Cisco router properly then it can affect speed and also allows unauthorized users to access your network. This can harm your confidential information and also interrupt the communication between two networks. For proper configuration of Cisco wireless router it is also necessary to identify the protocol that is used by the network. This protocol should be supported by the router for proper exchange of information between two networks.

Things to be needed:

  • HyperTerminal
  • Cisco Router
  • Ethernet cables
  • Steps to be followed

The first step is to open the HyperTerminal by approaching the following path: Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> Communications -> HyperTerminal. The main function of HyperTerminal is to configure Cisco brand routers that do not have their own utility configuration. These types of routers are also termed as dumb routers.

If you are going to use HyperTerminal for the first time then you have to enter local information like hostname, area code, password and name of your router. It is easy to access all above information for HyperTerminal. In case you are using dial up connection then double click for accessing the information that connects you with the outside world.

The next step is to type “Enter privilege mode” command into the text box. This command allows you to set up advance security setting without adding extra password or host name.

For opening the basic configuration command line you have to type “Enter Configuration Mode 1” in the text box. This command works only when cursor blinks ready on the computer screen.

Before starting configuration you have to enter following line "MyRouter1 (config-if) 1 IP add 192.168.0.1 255.255.255.0 [Set IP address and subnet mask]." This line sets the IP address and subnet mask for your router. After this step, your IP address is able to communicate with the outside world.

For securing configuration of Cisco router type the following line "CiscoRouter1 (config-line) 1 password (  ) #login (  )."  Type some meaningful login name and password that should be difficult to crack by the hackers.

Also set the bandwidth of the router and at last click on the save button for saving all the recommended settings.

Some important facts

Modern Cisco routers are available with automatic configuration utility. In that case, you don’t have to cram all commands explained above. You can easily configure Cisco router by following simple configuration steps. It completes the configuration within few minutes for you. It is also necessary to save the login name and password of the router for future use. If you don’t save the initial settings then you have to configure the router from scratch again.

Login name and password is the important step while you are configuring the Cisco router as it limits the access of your network by the unauthorized user. You can also make the router invisible for outsiders so that you can make your communication secure from unwanted users.

Set up a Linksys Router

Cisco is a popular brand name that releases the series of wireless routers under the name Linksys. Linksys is one of the most popular wireless routers that make your communication secure and easy. The most highlighting point about Linksys router is its plug and play configuration.

Steps that help you in configuring Linksys Router

The first step is to connect WAN port of Linksys router with DSL port of the modem through Ethernet cable.

Turn off the DSL modem then turn on the modem and Linksys router in the same order. Now connect your computer and Linksys router with the help of an Ethernet cable.

Now access the Internet Explorer and type the 192.168.1.1 IP address in the address bar. It will display the login page in front of you. Now enter the login name and password for accessing the configuration page. This page allows you to set up the router settings. Here you can change the login name and password. You can also set the network name and name of your router. Every time you are changing the configuration settings, don’t forget to click over the save button.

You can see the home Tab and wireless tab at the configuration page. Navigate the home tab for changing the login name and password. If you want to rename the network then access the Wireless tab from the configuration page. Now connect yourself wirelessly with the network for exchanging the information.

If you want to reset the Linksys router setting then press and hold the reset key for up to 30 seconds. You can also use a CD for set up Linksys wireless router on your computer. Don’t forget to take the backup of initial details and network name for future reference.

Set up security for Linksys wireless router

You can make your router more secure through password or encryption standards. You can see a link wireless security at the top of your configuration page. Here you can set the password for your network. Here you will find different encryption standard like WEP, WPA, WPA 2 and MAC. You can use any one of these encryption standards for making your communication more secure.

WEP (wired equivalent privacy) is an old encryption standard that is suitable for home users or small businesses. If you are an enterprise user then you are recommended to use WPA or WPA 2 encryption standard. WPA 2 is the latest security mechanism used by wireless industries and it is also approved by IEEE.

You can use only one encryption standard from WEP, WPA and WPA 2. MAC can be used along with one of three encryption standards explained earlier. MAC includes the list of IP addresses that you want to allow or deny from accessing your network. Today it has become an essential requirement to configure encryption standards along with the wireless router.
